Because the media pushes an unrealistic ideal of beauty the public has a distorted image of true attractiveness. This is due to the fact that most of the images individuals see on television or in magazines are distorted through technologies, such as airbrushing, making the end image looks completely different than the original. An example of this extremity would be a commercial sponsored by Dove that gives an example of how distorted the end photograph is from the original model. In this video the model looks completely different from her picture because of airbrushing techniques. After the public is shown this frightening image the commercial ends with “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.” (site ?) This saying is true, and unfortunately when most women and young girls see idealistic images of models it makes people feel like they will never be able to achieve this false form of beauty, leading to a negative body image. Therefore, for the Women Studies group project, group two has decided to focus on challenging the current perception of beauty while showing the importance of creating and having a positive body image. The group plans on challenging the current distorted image of beauty through a public service announcement in the form of a video. The theme of the video will be beautiful girls of every shape and color voicing what makes them gorgeous and unique. The group plans on premiering our video to the student body at Georgia Southwestern Stat University on November 20, 2008, and have a latter re-showing during out presentation to the Women Studies class.
